Part B - Apply to online to VIU or NIC, using

Note and understand that you are applying to a university that is not Brooks and is not high school. It is an adult program that you will be required to manage as an adult. The university will send you emails, which you must check, and your parent(s) will not receive any of the communication. While you can always reach out to a Brooks Career Pathways Coordinator, the experience of going to university is your experience. We are here to support you by connecting you to the correct person or service at the university, but it is your responsibility to manage your own application, including fees, communication with your instructor, and any counselling/advising that may be required.

Step 5  Receive confirmation of program acceptance / confirm acceptance via email.

*Check your email* - correspondence from the university does not go to a parent or to a Brooks contact. It is up to you to stay on top of communication from your program/university.

Step 6  Pay program fees by June 15.

Frequently Asked Questions

What courses/prerequisites do I need to have to be able to apply and be accepted into a Dual Credit Program?
It is different for each program so check the links specific to the program you want to take on the university site. For example, . Generally speaking, you will need to have completed Math 11 and English 11 (and in some cases - for certificate programs and university enrichment courses - English 12), and you must show that you are in good academic standing.

Why am I applying in two places?
Dual (credit) means 'two'. You are receiving credit for both a high school course and a university course, so you have to apply to both institutions. You have to apply to Brooks/qathet because you are applying to request sponsorship from ²Ýݮֱ²¥ to pay your tuition for you. You have to apply to the university because the university is offering the course that you are planning to take so your primary communication should be with the university. The way that it works for all universities in BC is that you need to apply using . 

So: 

#1 - complete a Dual Credit Application through the Career Pathways Department in the program of your choice: Trades Application, or Certificate Program/University Enrichment Application. 

#2 - apply using the links for the university course for which you are applying once your application has been approved by a Career Pathways Coordinator. Dual credit also means that you are still connected to your high school and we are here to support you.

How are applications evaluated? Is there a waitlist for programs?
The Career Pathways team will review your application based on thorough completion, the meeting of high school completion credits, attendance history, experience, references, and trades math assessment and interview, if applicable. Applications are not evaluated on a first-come, first-served basis, however, if all applications equally meet the above criteria, consideration will be made to give priority to those applications who are received first. If you are put on a waitlist, priority will be given to students in the order that the applications were received, if all application criteria is met.

How can I get support if I have an IEP?
Dual credit university programs have services in place to support you. Request a copy of your IEP from your school's Inclusive Education Teacher and share the information and your needs with the university advisor. Here are some helpful links:

What if I have a problem with attendance or personal issues during my Dual Credit Course?
Step 1 - talk to your instructor (you must inform them by 8am on the day of your absence)
Step 2 - speak with an advisor at the university (see above) for accommodations and/or connect with your Brooks Career Pathways coordinator to help you get connected to the supports you need

What are the requirements around attendance?
Dual credit university courses have a mandatory minimum number of hours that you must complete. Talk to your instructor about the expectations, but usually more than 10 absences (or more than 3 days in a row) result in withdrawal from the program, unless you have a doctor's note.

What if I am going to be late for my VIU or NIC course?
You MUST text your instructor before 8am on the day of your course to avoid tardiness negatively affecting your academic standing. When in doubt, communicate.

What if the program is full? What if I am on a waitlist?
Brooks Secondary has no control over available seats in any university program. Look for communication from the university to confirm your waitlist or admissions status. Please note that NIC and Camosun Auto, Plumbing, and Welding programs usually have a waitlist, so it is advised that you apply early. In Powell River, the Automotive Program was full (with a waitlist) for the 25-26 school year, but there were spots still available for Carpentry.

What if I also need help with paying for the fees beyond the tuition?
As you know, ²Ýݮֱ²¥ pays the tuition for Dual Credit courses. Usually program fees, activity fees, student fees, grad fees, and supplies (such as personal protective equipment and textbooks) etc. are paid for by students/families. If you are in a situation where you need help with taking care of these extra costs -- and your application is complete and you are a serious candidate for the program -- please reach out to a Career Pathways Coordinator. For both VIU and NIC we have funding sources that can be accessed to support students in need.

What is the partnership of Dual Credit with universities, how does that work?
²Ýݮֱ²¥ has partnerships with Vancouver Island University and North Island College in the form of an MOU (Memorandum of Understanding) that is the supporting documentation to allow Brooks students to attend these universities as part of a Dual Credit Program. We also have a relationship with Camosun College, and the potential of a relationship with other post-secondary institutions should you wish to apply. With this MOU comes responsibility. qathet District students are supported by their secondary school, and they need to represent this school with integrity and professionalism. We want students to thrive with this opportunity. We want students to step up and play their learning role and we are here to support you in your success.

What is so important about checking my personal email?
As a Dual Credit student, and a student of the university for which you applied and got accepted, it is your responsibility to communicate with that institution and work within their parameters. Neither Brooks or your parents/caregivers will be receiving the emails from the institution, so it is up to you to check your email regularly to ensure you are informed about processes and expectations surrounding your course(s).
